How to improve your brand's visibility in AI search engines

· 5 min read · By the Geonos team

The short answer

AI engines write answers from sources they can read. To be named, make the sources say the right things about you: clear pages on your own site, accurate listings and reviews, and mentions in the places AI already cites. Check what AI says today, fix the sources, then measure again.

Step 1: find out what AI says about you today

Write down the questions your buyers ask before they choose: "best X for Y", "X vs Z", "is X worth it". Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Save each answer with its date. Do this more than once: answers change between runs, so a single answer is an anecdote and a rate over many runs is a measurement.

Step 2: find the sources behind the answers

Engines build answers from pages, reviews, videos and forum threads. For every answer, list the sources it used and note two things: where a competitor is cited and you are not, and where the source says something wrong or out of date about you. That list is your work plan.

Step 3: make your own pages easy to quote

  • Answer first. Give the direct answer in the first two sentences, then the detail.
  • One page per question. A page that tries to answer five questions is quoted for none.
  • Facts that match everywhere. Names, prices, specs and policies should read the same on your site, your listings and your profiles.
  • Show a date. A visible "last checked" date helps readers and engines see the page is current.
  • Let the crawlers in. Check that your robots.txt does not block the bots that feed AI answers, such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Bingbot and Googlebot. A free audit checks this for you.

Step 4: show up in the sources AI trusts outside your site

AI does not take your word for it. It also listens to reviews, Reddit threads, YouTube videos, articles and social posts. Find which of those sources each engine cites for your category, then earn accurate coverage there: honest reviews, helpful answers in the communities your buyers read, and press that states the facts about you.

Step 5: keep Google SEO healthy

AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini draw on Google's own index, so a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet still feeds AI answers. The link is weaker than it was: the share of AI Overview citations coming from Google's top 10 fell from 76% in 2025 to about 17 to 38% in early 2026 (Ahrefs, BrightEdge). So SEO is the base, not the whole job.

Step 6: measure, and check outside your dashboard

Repeat the same prompts on a schedule and compare dated captures before and after each change. Cross-check with AI referral sessions in GA4 (ChatGPT visits arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com) and the AI reports in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Which metrics to track

Pick a few and keep them stable, so you can see a trend:

  • Mention rate: how often an engine names your brand across many runs of the same prompts.
  • Citation rate: how often your own pages appear as a cited source.
  • Share of voice: your share of mentions compared with your competitors for the same prompts.
  • Accuracy: whether the answer describes you correctly, with the date of the capture.
  • AI referral sessions: visits from AI engines in GA4, for example utm_source=chatgpt.com.

Always report the number of runs behind a rate. A percentage from three runs is not the same as one from three hundred.

What does not help much

Do not expect a single trick. In a May 2026 controlled study, JSON-LD schema showed no significant citation lift in Google AI Mode (+2.4%) or ChatGPT (+2.2%) (Ahrefs). Google said in June 2026 that an llms.txt file neither helps nor harms, and an SE Ranking study of about 300,000 domains found no relationship between having one and being cited. Visible, accurate answers on the page are what AI can quote.

How Geonos helps

Geonos runs the prompts for you, keeps the saved answer, its date and its sources, ranks what to fix first and checks again. Priority prompts are checked every day and the rest every 3 days. See the plans.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to improve AI visibility?

It depends on how fast the sources change and how often engines refresh. No one can promise a timeline. Measure the same prompts over weeks and look at the trend.

Is AI visibility the same as GEO or AEO?

They overlap. AI visibility is the result you measure: how often AI names or cites you. GEO and AEO are names for the work of earning it, and both build on solid SEO.

Which AI engines should I care about first?

The ones your buyers use. For most brands that means ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, then Perplexity and Claude. If you sell on Amazon, Alexa for Shopping matters too.

Do I need to publish more content?

Not necessarily more, but clearer. Fix the pages that answer your buyers' questions and the sources AI already cites before you write new ones.

What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization is the work of getting your brand named and cited in AI answers. It goes by several names, including GEO and AEO, and it builds on solid SEO rather than replacing it.

Do I need an AI search monitoring tool?

You can start by hand: run your most important prompts several times, save the dated answers and compare them month to month. A monitoring tool becomes worth it when you track many prompts across several engines and need the sources and a trend without doing it manually.

What strategies improve brand visibility in AI search engines?

Check what AI says today, find the sources behind the answers, make your own pages easy to quote, earn accurate mentions in the sources AI already cites, keep Google SEO healthy, and measure over many runs.
